Pre-Conference Trainee Workshop

From Idea to Impact: Designing Nutrition Research for Uptake

Workshop Overview

You’ve generated the evidence—now what does it take for that evidence to inform a real decision? Knowledge mobilization (KMb) goes beyond dissemination. It requires intentionally designing research for use—identifying priority audiences, clarifying the decisions your findings can inform, and selecting the right products, timing, and engagement strategies to support uptake in policy, practice, and community settings. In this interactive workshop, participants will work through a realistic nutrition research scenario and develop a practical KMb plan under real-world constraints. Through guided activities, they will practice prioritizing audiences, aligning messages and products to decision contexts, and adapting strategies when faced with limited budgets, competing evidence, or shifting timelines.

Who can attend? This workshop is open to trainees (undergraduate & graduate students) and early career researchers/postdoctoral fellows (ECI).

The 2026 Pre-Conference Trainee Workshop registration must be purchased as an add-on to the general conference registration. Trainees must register for the conference to attend the workshop. This is an in-person event only, and space is limited to 50 participants. SOLD OUT Registration fees include the full workshop program, lunch, and refreshment breaks. Please bring a computer to this workshop and ensure you have adequate battery.  View Workshop materials

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Differentiate knowledge mobilization from knowledge dissemination
  2. Describe key principles for designing research for uptake in policy, practice, and/or community contexts.
  3. Identify and prioritize target audiences for nutrition research, articulating how audience needs, decision contexts, and timelines shape knowledge mobilization strategies.
  4. Develop a strategic knowledge mobilization plan that aligns message, audience, product, timing, and engagement approach under realistic resource and contextual constraints.
  5. Adapt knowledge mobilization strategies to different contexts, including academic-only dissemination versus time-sensitive real-world decision-making environments.

This event is supported by the CIHR INMD Training and Community Support Grant.
